Welcome to the Celtnet Telecommunications Companies Home Page

Welcome to the Celtnet Telecommunications Companies Home Page — Here you will find information about the world's main telecommunications companies. How they came about and how they have evolved over the years.

Why is this information important? Well, this site would not exist without the internet and the internet would not exist without the telephone infrastructure. Indeed, it can be argued that the history of the internet is effectively an extension of the history of the public telephone system. After all, the internet began as a data system on top of the public telephone network.

But the continuing evolution of telecommunications did not just provide us with the infrastructure of the internet. It has also given us mobile telephony. Indeed, many of the original telecommunications companies (telecos) have evolved into mobile (cellular) telephone companies. Mobile telephones are an ubiquitous aspect of modern life and this revolution in telephony has allowed people in countires with little or no fixed line infrastructure to be connected to the remainder of the world.

However, the history of telecommunications is often all about convergence of technologies coming together to produce something new. This is certainly the case with telephony and the internet. The internet itself grew from the fixed line infrastructure of the major telephone companies. The telecos themselves moved on to mobile telephony and now mobile telephones themselves are hooking back into the internet with mobile e-mail and mobile web browsing. Indeed, major websites (this one included) are developing versions of their websites optimized for mobile phones. And as phones become more powerful and with bigger screens the mobile internet is becoming a considerably larger market.
The Wired World

The image above shows the main global trunk connections for both telecommunications and internet linkages.

To understand the beginnings of the internet we need to examine the beginnings of the major national and international telecommunications operators. This series on TELECOS (Telecommunications Companies) will therefore look at the histories of the major global players from their inceptions right up to the modern world of fast internet connections and mobile telephony.

This site deals with mobile phones in the mobile/cellular telephones in one section of the site and the internet and computers are discussed in the Celtnet Information region of the site, so its only a natural progression for the internet, how it arose, and where it is going to be discussed here.

I'm starting this process by discussing the major telecommunications companies and how they have evolved and developed.

Below you will find links to pages describing the history of these telecommunications companies. This series will eventually build to a history of the internet.

If, however, you would like information about mobile/cellular telephon manufacturers then please go to the Mobile Phone Manufacturers. There you will see a list of all the major mobile handset manufacturers world-wide. The links on those pages will take you to a pae for that manufacturer, where you will find information about the manufacturer as well as links to dissassembly guides for any telephones that the manufacturer makes (where available).

As well as the information provided on the Telecos and Mobile Telephony systems this page will also evolve over time to become a portal to the various internet-associated resources on this site.
