The Beginnings of the Internet
The Wired World

The image above shows the main global trunk connections for both telecommunications and internet linkages.

The history of the internet is effectively an extension of the history of the public telephone system. After all, the internet began as a data system on top of the public telephone network.

To understand the beginnings of the internet we need to examine the beginnings of the major national and international telecommunications operators. This series on TELECOS (Telecommunications Companies) will therefore look at the histories of the major global players from their inceptions right up to the modern world of fast internet connections and mobile telephony.

Below you will find links to pages describing the history of these telecommunications companies. This series will eventually build to a history of the internet.
