Tanzanian Potato Balls Recipe

Origin: Tanzania      Period: Traditional

Ingredients:

700g potatoes, peeled and chopped
60ml lime juice
1/2 tsp salt
1 chilli pepper, crushed
220g chickpea flour
coconut oil
100g grated fresh coconut crushed chillies (preferably piri-piri), to taste

Tanzanian Potato Balls Preparation:


Method:

Boil the potatoes in lightly-salted water until soft. Drain then combine with the lime juice, salt and pepper. Using a potato masher process to a smooth paste. With greased hands shape the batter into 3cm balls and roll these in the chickpea flour.

Add the oil to a large frying pan and heat to about 180°C. Add the balls a few at a time and fry until golden. Drain on kitchen paper and serve hot accompanied by a condiment made from a mixture of the grated coconut, crushed chilli and 3 tbsp water.
