South African Fish Pie Recipe

Origin: South Africa      Period: Traditional

Ingredients:

200g onions, chopped
1/2 tsp black pepper
2 tsp salt
1/2 tsp powdered mustard
60g butter
750g cold steamed fish, de-boned and flaked
250ml passata (tomato sauce)
100g mashed potatoes
1 egg, lightly beaten
400g mashed potatoes
1 egg beaten
2 tbsp water

South African Fish Pie Preparation:


Method:

Add he butter to a pan and fry the onions, pepper, salt and mustard until the onions soften then add the fish and fry for 2 minutes before adding the tomato sauce, 100g potatoes and beaten egg. Take off the heat and pack into a buttered 25cm square pie dish. Spread the remaining mashed potatoes over the top and brush with 1 egg beaten with 2 tbsp water. Grind some black pepper over the top and place in an oven pre-heated to 170°C for 30 minutes, or until golden brown.

Cut the pie into wedges and serve.
