Pumpkin Bredie Recipe

Origin: South Africa      Period: Traditional

Ingredients:

1.8kg stewing lamb or mutton, cut into cubes
2 tbsp oil
4 onions, sliced
1 hot chilli, finely chopped
2kg pumpkin, diced
salt and black pepper to taste
1 pinch cinnamon
1 pinch nutmeg
1 tsp sugar
1 bay leaf
1 piece orange peel

Pumpkin Bredie Preparation:


Method:

Brown the meat in the oil in a large pot. Remove the meat and set aside then, using the same pot, fry the onions and chilli until tender. Return the meat to the pot, along with the remaining ingredients. Add 250ml water and simmer until tender (about 1h for lamb 2.5h for mutton). Serve on a bed of rice.
