Guava Squares Recipe

Origin: Namibia      Period: Traditional

Ingredients:

225g self-raising flour
1 tsp baking power
tsp salt
1/2 tsp cinnamon
60g butter
115g sugar
1 egg
1 tsp. vanilla extract
120g chopped guava
100g brown sugar
cinnamon sugar (optional)

Guava Squares Preparation:


Method:

Combine flour, baking power, salt and cinnamon. Melt the butter in a saucepan and beat-in the sugar, egg and vanilla until smooth. Stir in the guava and add this mixture to the dry ingredients. Pour into a greased 22 x 22cm square pan and sprinkle with cinnamon sugar. Bake in an oven pre-heated to 170°C for 30 minutes. Allow to cool, tip out of the pan and cut into squares.

As a guide 1 US cup of flour = 4 1/2 oz = 140g (this applies to breadcrumbs, ground almonds etc
1 US cup of butter/margarine or sugar = 7 oz = 200g
