This is my disassembly page for the Sharp GX-20 mobile phone. This is a nice feature-rich little phone but one of its main drawbacks is that the silvered plastic fascia is very easily scratched. This means that one of the commonest things that users need to do is to replace the old cover with a new one. Probably because of this replacement fascias are extremely cheap (about $7) and if you follow a few basic rules and guidelines it's pretty easy to disassemble your phone and re-house in a new fascia. I've done this several times now and here is my guide:

The main problem with the disassembly of any Sharp phone is getting the right screwdriver for the job. Unlike most phones and electronic devices the screw heads in the Sharp phone aren't a torx or star shape, with six points to the star. Rather it's a 5-pointed star. I've searched high and low for a screwdriver or a screwdriver set that will securely and safely open the screws on various Sharp phones. The problem is in getting a screwdriver that will open the 5-star screws on these phones (and no, they're not Torx or 6-star screws). In fact the Sharp phone has a 1.5 x 25mm 5-star screw thread. There are a few screwdrivers out there of the correct size but in many of then the star form of the screwdriver's bit isn't crisp or well-defined enough to ensure that the screws will be opened safely without stripping the screw head. The only one that I have found to work every time is the BAK'U screwdriver which is supplied with 15 screw bits that will fit most mobile phones.

I admit that it's difficult to find this screwdriver, but you can get it from eBay (don't worry that this comes from Hong Kong, I've bought from them several times and encountered no problems): BAK'U 15-in-one Screwdriver Set from eBay. Now that you have the appropriate screwdriver it's possible for you to get started on the disassembly itself...

In addition to the screwdriver you will also need a needle or a pin, a pair of needle-nosed twezers and a flat plastic implement to prise apart the components of the phone. Anything flat but rigid will do. I have used an old SIM card in the past, but here I have a purpose-built tool which you can buy for about $3. This tool needs to be plastic to ensure that you don't scratch the fascias whilst taking them apart. You may also need a small flat-head screwdriver to ease some of the components apart. Once you've assembled all the components you're ready to disassemble the phone. The process described here is a full disassembly and is intended for a complete raplacement of the phone's case. I've done this many times and the phone's worked perfectly every time. But your mileage may vary. You carry out this process at your nown risc and neither I nor this site can be held responisble for any damage you may incurr.

front and back view of Sharp GX-20

First we'll start with front and back views of the classic Sharp GX-20 mobile phone. I know that you'll be familiar with these views already, but I'm placing them here so that you can use them to orient yourselves when going through the various other images on this site.

Removing the battery case and battery

For the GX-20 removing the battery bay cover is a simple matter of sliding the plastic cover plate down and away. After that it's a simple case of easing the battery out and sliding the SIM card (if you have one) out of its housing.

The easy part of the procedure is now done. To learn how to remove the main fascias, jump to the next part of this course.
