Start Making Money from the Web

This is an account of how I got started with a website and managed to get that website to pay for itself and more... Don't worry, I'm not trying to sell you anything, honestly. Nor is this one of those websites promising that you'll make $100 or more each week with no effort. My goals are rather more modest and realistic.

Just over two years ago I bought a domain name, paid for web hosting and started a website which you can find here [note, all links open in a new window so you can keep this document open]. This is not a commercial website, I just wanted to make various of my researches available. I soon found, however that I was haemorrhaging money keeping the site going and I started looking for ways to make money from the web. What follows represents what I have learnt so far.

You now have enough tools to get started. And for these first few ways of making money you don't even need a website!

Now you can Start Making Money:

I'll assume that initially you have absolutely no seed capital to start you off but that you want to get started right away... Now, you have registered for at least a couple of the FREE internet bank accounts haven't you? Good, then we can start making an income. OK, so we're starting slowly with Paid to Click and Paid to Search programmes that actually pay you for reading e-mails and perform valid searches on websites.

luckybizs is one of the better PTS (paid to search) programmes currently out there. All its links are worth 1c and it sends more 1c links to those members who perform a proper paid search (this will take more than the 45s the search timer runs for, but in a month you should make at least $10. This programme alone covers the entire cost of one of my main websites. This website itself earns nearly $430 a month which gives me a profit and pays for another website... and so on... Class act Clicks it really is! One of the few programmes that run PTS, PTC (paid to click), PTR (paid to read) and PTP (paid to promote). They pay very quickly once your reach the threshold of $9. Unlike almost all other PTS/PTC schemes they also allow the conversion of points into cash. Join class-act-clicks Here

There are a number of other PTC/PTS programmes out there and even the web payment/marketplace system StormPay have their own system called StormClix. Because of the nature of their business, however, many of these PTC programmes do not last very long and I would caution against joining any programme with too high an initial payout threshold or the entire programme may vanish before you get your first payout. Also, most of these schemes use PayPal as their payment system.

Maximizing your Income

If you have regular access to the internet, then it will probably be worthwhile for you to sign up for various paid survey schemes. These will, in general pay between $1 to $25 for a completed survey and generally pay out after a threshold of $10–$15 is reached. Click here for a list of paid survey sites...

Between the PTC/PTS programmes and the survey websites you should now be well on the way to making enough income to buy your first domain name [essentially the specific web location of your site] and somewhere to host it. In the UK I obtain my own domain names from Low Cost Names. They are also responsible for much of my web hosting (mostly because I have some slightly bizarre UNIX requirements for some websites). If all you need is a fairly 'vanilla' website then you might be better-off with someone like Cirtex Hosting for your web hosting requirements.

You now have a domain name (which defines your web presence) and you have someone to 'host' your website (provide it with a home). You're now ready to start building your own website and to actually make some 'real' money from it. Now comes the important part. For your website to make you a reasonable income it must be about something. Essentially the better the content of your website the more visitors you can drive to it. Also, the better the content and appearance of your website the more likely you are to get the 'big players' as affiliates. Essentially, until you have a 'real' website then 90% of potential affiliates won't even look at you. Basically create a website about something you know well. (This is not the only way of doing things, however and I'll talk about 'turnkey' solutions later). For the moment though we're following my path of success and failure.

Once you have a valid website, which could include any number of things [for example see my first website here]. The first place to go is the Amazon associates page. Amazon don't just do books; they now sell a whole range of products and they give 5% commission on all sales. You can gain access to Amazon UK here and Amazon US here. If you're looking for international traffic it's well worth using both your local Amazon site and the US site. Note also that Amazon's affiliate pages have a large number of tools to provide you with exactly the kinds of links you want.

Of course, the star payer in terms of ads is Google Adsense (they provide the searches above and below and the banners, right). They can also provide you with a free search system for your entire site. Even better their software cleverly links the ads they serve to the the content of the web page on which they're displayed and the nationality of the searcher. However, they are choosy about the sites that they allow to join and require a reasonable standard of content (which is one of the reasons why it's important for you to produce a high-quality website). I should tell you that I am a professional software developer and this course will save you lots of time and money and make your site look professional and use the latest technology. You can also advertise directly on your website. Popup and pop-behind ads are rather passe these days and tend to annoy users of your site. However, there is a relatively new technology: slide-in or glide-in ads that help to build income quickly from your website. One of the best sources of these ads is Glide Network that provides a small ad window which loads onto your page for 15 seconds and then automatically disappears. Payment is direct to PayPal.
