With the current changes to the Google indexing algorithm it is clear that the number and quality of links pointing to a site are the most important factor in determining both the site's ranking and how much of that site should be indexed. Though reciprocal links count in this 'popularity' equation, non-reciprocal links are far more important. As well as imporving your overall site ranking and visibility in the search engines linking is also a good way to drive traffic to your website as people really do use these listings to search for things. The more links there are to your website, the more people are likely to click on these links and visit your site and the more popular the search engines consider your site and so they give it a higher ranking. Alternatively you could think of it this way: if you had a 100 sites linking to you and each only sent one visitor to your website each and every week that still gives you an extra 100 visitors each week (or 5200 extra visitors a year). More importantly these are directed visitors who have come to your site because they are interested in the products that you are offering. As a result thy're far more likely to buy one of the products or services you're offering that the 1% purchase estimation of 'cold' visitors. 

Stnddard link exchanges are a great way of giving your site extra exposure and of driving new traffic to your site. However, as these exchanges are actively attempting to build reciprocal links your site may be lost in the general 'noise'. Also, reciprocal links count less that uni-directional links in terms of page and site rankings so you may not want to add backlink to your site.
