Celtic Gods: The Gaulish Goddess, Vercana (In the Song)

Vercana
A Gaulish goddess: In the Song

Vercana is a Gaulish goddess known from two inscriptions found in Germany and France. Interpretation of her name suggests that she might have been a muse-type goddess; a goddess of poetic inspiration.

Gaul: In the Song

Vercana is a goddess known from two inscriptions. She is invoked as de(a)e Vercan(a)e, along with Meduna in Bertrich, Germany [CIL XIII 7667] and as deae Vercanu in Ernstviller, Moselle, France [CIL XIII 4511].

Unfortunately no representations of this goddess have survived, however her name can be interpreted on the basis of the reconstructed proto-Celtic as being composed of the elements: *wor- (over, on), *kan-e/o (song), along with the feminine ending -a. Thus Vercana is 'on or over the song'. Quite possibly she is 'In the Song' and as such would be a muse-type deity.
