Gaul: The Goddess who is Near
Uncia is a goddess known from a single inscription found at Iülich, Germany, where she is invoked as deae Unciae (CIL XIII 07870). Unfortunately none of this goddess' attributes have survived, save her name which can be interpreted on the basis of the reconstructed proto-Celtic elements: *onko- (at, but which also has the connotations of 'near'), the deicitic particle -i- and the feminine ending -a. Thus Uncia is 'The Goddess who is Near'.
Based on this name it may be presumed that Uncia was a goddess of the 'protector' or 'guardian of the tribe' type, though this cannot be asserted with any degree of certainty.
