Celtic Gods: The Cymric Hero, Tudwal Tudclud (Leader of the People, Defender of the People)

Tudwal Tudclud
A Cymric Hero of the Old North, also known as Tutwal Tutklyt: Leader of the People, Defender of the People

Tudwal Tudclud (Tutwal Tutklyt) is a Cymric (Welsh) hero of the Old North known from tha ancient Welsh genealogies and the Welsh Triads where he is named as the father of Rhydderch Hael. He was the posessor of a magical whetstone on which a sword sharpened by a brave man would surely slay its foe.

Synonyms: Tutwal Tutklyt
Cym: Leader of the People, Defender of the People

Tudwal Tudclud is a hero of the Old North known mainly from the ancient genealogies. He is named as the father of Rhydderch Hael in Triad 2 of the Triedd Ynys Prydein an assertion which is confirmed in verse 8 of the genealogies, Bonhedd Gwyr y Gogledd. The Bonedd y Seing names a further son of Tudwal as Ricwlff.

Tudwal is also named in Appendix III of the Trioedd Ynys Prydein the 'Thirteen Treasures of the Island of Britain' which names the whetstone of Tudwal Tudglud as the eighth treasure. If a brave man sharpened his sword on it and if that sword were to draw blood the victim would surely die. But if a cowardly man sharpened his sword on it then his opponent would be no worse.

Tudwal Tudclud's name can be derived from the components tud (from the reconstructed proto-Celtic *toutā- [tribe]) and the Cymric gwâl (leader, ruler). Thus Tudawal can be interpreted as 'Leader of the People' and is equivalent to the Irish name, Tuathal. Tudwal's epithet of Tudclud contains the second element klut which, in its archaic form means 'to defend'. Thus Tudclud is 'Defender of the People'.
