Celtic Gods: The Gaulish and Galician God, Tavaianos (The Broad One)

Tavianos
A Gaulish and Galician god: The Broad One

Tavianos is a Gaulish and Galician god known from an inscription found at Alba Inula, Romania, where he is associated with Roman Jupiter. Roman sources also indicate that em>Zeus Tavianos was the tutelary deity of Büyük Nefes köy in Turkey (ancient Galicia). He may be a sky god of the 'father of the tribe' type.

Tavianos is known from a single inscription found at Alba Inula, Romania where he is assimilated by Interpretato Romana with the Roman supreme deity Jupiter Optimus Maximus. In addition, Roman literary and numismatic evidence suggests that Zeus Tavianos was the tutelary deity of Büyük Nefes köy in modern Turkey (a site that was known as Tavium in ancient times). Thus Tavianos would seem to be the patron deity of the region.

Tavianos' equation with Zeus/Jupiter would suggest that he was considered as a sky god, a supposition that is given some credence from the interpretaton of his name which can be derived from the reconstructed proto-Celtic elements *tan-nu- (braoden) and the masculine ending -os. Thus Tavianos is 'The Broad One', a fitting epithet for a sky god.
