Gaul: The Shining Thrower

Surburus is a little-known deity, commemorated by only a single inscription found at Le Donon, Bas-Rhin, France. This deity's attributes remain a mystery, however on the basis of the reconstructed proto-Celtic lexicon his name can be interpreted as being formed from the components: *surdo-/*sordo (shining) and *bur-w/o- (to throw) along with the Latinized masculine ending -us. Thus his name can be rendered as 'The Shining Thrower' which might suggest either a martial deity or a god of lightning.
