Celtic Gods: The Cymric Hero, Serygei Wyddel (Serygei the Irishman)

Serygei Wyddel
A Cymric Hero: Serygei the Irishman

Serygei Wyddel (Seregri Wyddel) is a Cymric (Welsh) hero known form the Welsh Triads and is represented as the leader of the Invading Irish in Anglesea whom Caswallon Lawhir defeated to drive them out of North Wales.

Synonyms: Seregri Wyddel
Cym: Serygei Wyddel

Serygein Wyddel is only known from the Trioedd Ynys Prydein where he is named it Triad 62. Here he emerges as the opponent of Caswallon leader of one of the 'Three Fettered War-bands of the Island of Britain'. Triad 4 of Appendix V of the Trioedd Ynys Prydein states that the battle between the Cymry and the invading Irish was over when Caswallon Lawhir caught and slew Seregri (Serygei) Wyddel (the Irishman) at Llan y Gwyddyl (The Enclosur of the Irishmen) in Caergybi (Holyhead). It would seem therefore that these triads preserve a real native tradition of of the final battle in the fifth century between the Cymry and the invading Irish.

The name Serygei/Seregri undoubtedly represents a Cymric corruption of what was originally an Irish name though neither an interpretation for its meaning nor a sensible derivation for the Irish original has yet been proposed. What we see here though is a window on a very turbulent time in the history of the Cymry.
