Sedatus
A Gaulish God: The Seated One

Sedatus is a Gaulish god known from inscriptions found at Germany, Hungary, Romania, Slovenia and Switzerland. None of his attributes have survived, but his name can be interpreted as 'the seated one'.

Gaul: The Seated One

Sedatus is a very shadowy deity known only from inscirptions found at Pfünz in Germany (CIL III 05918), Stuhlweissenburg in Hungary (CIL III 10335), Acer in Romania (CIL III 08086), Haselbach in Slovenia (CIL III 03922) and Saint-Maurice in Switzerland (AE 1879, 3). He would therefore appear to be far more than just a local deity. However, save for his name none of his attributes or functions have survived.

Sedatus' name can be interpreted as being derived from the reconstructed proto-Celtic root *sed-e/o- (to sit), along with the Latinized masculine ending -us giving us an interpretation of 'The Seated One'. Though it is merely speculation the deity's name would suggest that he might be a god of divination or a lawgiver; an arbiter of disputes.
