Gaul: Renderer in Battle

Melovius is a deity known from a single inscription found at Nïmes, Gard, France (AE 1959, 192) where he is invoked by interpretato Romana as Marti Melovius (Mars Melovius). Beyond the name and his assimilation with Roman Mars nothing is known of this deity's attributes. The name is probably derived from the reconstructed proto-Celtic element *mel-e/o- (grind) and possibly *wi- (song) giving a name something like 'Song of rending' with a meaning of 'Renderer in Battle [about whose victories songs are written]' indicating that he represents the martial aspect of Mars.
