Meduna is a godess known from a single inscription found at Bertrich in Germany (CIL XIII 07667) where she is associated with the goddess Vercana. Meduna's name is derived from the reconstructed proto-Celtic lexemes: *medu- (mead) *-un- (a particle that bears the sense of 'spirit', 'essence') along with the feminine ending *-a. This gives the sense of 'Essence of Mead' which may imply a divinatory role to this goddess. This arising from the ability of mead or any intoxicating liquor to induce an altered state of consciousness. Indeed, the modern Cymric word for mushroom madarch literally means 'The Chief of Meads' and links to the hallucinatory properties of some fungi.
