Magisus is known from Deneuvre, Meurthe-et-Moselle, France where he is assimilated with and invoked as HERCULES MAGISUS. The name Magisus is derived from the reconstructed proto-Celtic compoents *magyo- (great) giving an interpretation for his name of 'The Great One'. Though equated with Hercules by interpretato Romana, the attributes of the Celtic Hercules are complex and may well be equivalent to those of the Celtic deity Ogmios (see this entry for a full discussion) and includes, strength, eloquence and provision of the sacral feast as well as being a deity of binding and a probably psychopomp, though which particular aspect he was invoked as is not known.
