Magiorix is knwon from a single votive inscription found at Saverne, Bas-Rhin, France which reads: MERCURIO ET APOLLONI MAGIORIX E[T] QUINTVS SECVNDI FIL VLSM (To Mercury and Apollo Magiorix, Quintus son of Secundus willingly and deservedly fulfilled his vow). From this inscirption Magiorix has been assimilated with the Roman god Apollo by interpretato Romana and his invoked along with Mercury. The name, Magiorix is derived from the reconstructed proto-Celtic compoents *magyo- (great) and *rīg- giving the meaning 'Great King'. In Gaulish context Apollo is generally equated with the divine youth and with healing and there may also be a link with light and warmth. Possiblly Apollo Magiorix is a deity of knowldege and law-giving which would be compatible with the meaning of his name as 'geat king'.
