Celtic Gods: The Gaulish god, Luxovius (He of the Warmth)

Luxovius
A Gaulish God, also known as Lussoius: He of the Warmth

Luxovius (Lussoius) is a Gaulish god known from inscriptions found at Luxueli, France (where he is the titular deity). He is also the titular deity of the Luxovii of Brittany and he is the god of the warmth of sacred springs.

Synonyms: Lussoius
Gaul: He of the Warmth

Luxovius is the eponymous deity of Luxueil, Haute-Saône, France (CIL XIII 05425, 05426). In an inscription found there he is named as the consort of the goddess Bricta. Luxovius is also the tutelary deity of the Luxovii tribe of Aremorica (Normandy). A deity named as Lussoius from the same locale probably represents a homonym for Luxovius with the 'ss' substituted for the 'x' sound.

Luxovius' name is probably derived from the reconstructed proto-Celtic root luko- (bright) which, in turn is derived from the proto Indo-European root leuk- (light, brightness), which is also the root of Latin lux (light). The name can be interpreted as 'he of the light'. Though a more accurate rendering might be 'he of the warmth'. Warmth here being the warmth of sunligh and the warmth of the sacred springs with whom this deity and his consort, Bricta is intimately connected.
