Gaul: ?Defender of the Waters/?Defender of the Source

Lavictus is known from a single inscription found at Pouzacc in the Hautes-Pyrénées region of France. In this inscription he is invoked as Mars Lavictus and, in common with other Cerltic interpretations of Roman Mars is either a martial or a healer deity.

The etymology of the deity's name is uncertain, but it may be derived from the reconstructed proto-Celtic roots *lawo- (water) and the roots *wik-ari- (fierce), *wīk-ā- (fight), *wik-e/o- (fight) and *wīko/u- (village). All the latter derivations have the sense of protection thus Lavictus' name may have the meaning of 'Defender of the Waters' or 'Defender of the Source'.
