Isosa
A Gaulish Goddess: The Respected One
Isosa is a Gaulish goddess known from a single inscription found at Etrechy, France where she is associated with Gnatus, Hidua, Carantana, Etioan and Roman Mercury. All these deities are either assoicated with knowledge or have knowledge as a central part of their cult thus Isosa may also have been a goddess of knowledge. |

Isosa is known only from a single inscription found at Etrechy, Cher, France (AE 1954, 38) where she is associated with the following deities Gnatus, Hidua, Carantana, Etiona and Mercury.
Though the etymology of Isosa's name is uncertain it may be related to the reconstructed proto-Celtic root *wesu- (excellent, noble) which also gives us the name of the Gaulish god Esus. Which would indicate that Isosa's name means 'The Respected One'.
Although nothing remains of Isosa's cult, the deities she is assocaited with (Gnatus, Hidua, Carantana, Etioan and Roman Mercury) are very interesting in that they all have an aspect of information and knowledge as part of their cults, thus Isosa may, hersef, have been a goddess of knowledge and information.
