In the Mabinogi of Pwyll Pendefig Dyfed Hefydd Hen is Rhiannon's father. It is in his llys (court) that the marriage between Rhiannon and Greidiawl is to be held and where Pwyll eventually tricks Greidawl and gains Rhiannon's hands. In this tale is is Hefydd also who attains the sureties from Greidawl concerning his conduct after his defeat by Pwyll.

Hefydd's name is pobably derived from the Cymric word efydd (bronze) with the epithet hen (the Old). [The stem 'H' is simply a Latinized appendage to 'e' or 'a' Celtic names cf Esus and Hesus.]
