Gisacus
A Gaulish god: He of the Battle Axe
Gisacus is a Gaulish god known from Vieil-Evreux, France where a sanctuary dedicated to him seems to have been sited. The interpretation of his name would suggest him to be a martial or a protective diety, but this is speculation, at best. |

Gisacus is another Gaulish daity about whom we know very little. He is known from a single inscription at the vicus-sanctuary at Gisay, not far from Vieil-Evreux, Eure, France (CIL XIII 03197). The sanctuary seems to have been (at least partly) dedicated to this deity.
No interpretation for the deity's name has, as yet, been put forward. But Gisacus may be related to the Old Cymric gisarn (battle-axe) which would make him either a warrior deity or a deity of the 'defender of the tribe' or 'defender of the land' type ie a 'father diety'.
