Celtic Gods: The Gaulish God, Gesacus (Sacred Earth)

Gesacus
A Gaulish God, Gesacus: Sacred Earth

Gesacus is a Gaulish god known from an inscribed bronze plaque found at Amiens, France. Unfortunately, nothing is known about this deity save his name, which can be tentatively interpreted as 'sacred earth'.

Gaul: Sacred Earth

Gesacus is known from a single inscription upon a bronze plaque found at Amiens, France. The plaque reads GESACUS AVG SATVRNINUS SECCI FIL VSLM (To Gesacus the most venerable, from Saturninus daughter of Secci, willingly and deservedly in fulfillment of a vow).

Beyond the name and inscription nothing more is known of this deity. The etymology of his name is uncertain it is possible that it is derived from the proto Into-European roots *ge- (earth) and *sak-ro- (sacred) giving 'Sacred Earth' though this derivatio is more Greco-Roman than Celtic.
