Garwy features in two of the triads in Trioedd Ynys Prydein. In Triad 46c, 'Three Steeds of the Island of Britain' Gwirian Groddos is given as the steed of Garwy Hir. Triad 57 names Arthur's mistresses. The foremost of these being Indeg the daughter of Garwy Hir.

The remainder of what we know about Garwy comes from poems such as I Hywel ap Goronwy in the Llyfr Du Caerfyrddin which mentions kyghor arwy (the wisdom of Garwy). All other references to Carwy Hir come from the works of the gogynfeirdd and these refer to Garwy as being himself a noted lover; with the suggestion that his paramour was Creirwy. According to the bard Hywel ab Owain Garwy's lover was held captive in the court of Ogyruann, Gwenhwyfar's father.
