Gaul: He who Strikes and Wounds

Exsobinus is an epithet of Mars Lenus and is known form an inscription found at Virton, Belgium (CIL XIII 03970). Lenus was a deity both assoicated wth war and with healing. Exsobinus probably represents a specific aspect of this partiicular deity.

The name may be derived from the reconstructed proto-Celtic roots: nexso- (wound) and bi-na- (strike, hit) giving 'He who Strikes and Wounds' thus Exsobinus reflects the purely martial aspect of Lenus.
