Celtic Gods: The Cymric God, Eunydd (Confusing Mist)

Eunydd
A Cymric God: Confusing Mist

Eunydd is a Cymric (Welsh) god known from the Welsh genealogies where he is named as one of the children of Dôn and is therefore on eof the elder Cymric gods. Originally he may have been a mage-type deity, but his mythos has been entirely lost to us.

Cym: Confusing Mist

Eunydd is named as one of the children of Dôn in the Cymric genealogies Bonedd yr Arwyr (Peniarth MS 127), his siblings being: Gwydion, Gofannon, Amaethon, Hunawg, Idwal, Elestron, Digant, Gilfaethwy, Cynan, Hedd, Aidden, Elawg and Arianrhod. Together they represent the Cymric family of gods known as the: Plant Dôn.

The etymology of Eunydd's name is uncertain, but it may be derived from the Old Cymric elements eu (falsehood) and nudd (haze, mist) and can be interpreted as 'Confusing Fog'. The original mythos of Eunydd may have protrayed him as a mage-type deity and his powers may have been those of illusion. However, this is only speculative as the only other surviving mention of Eunydd (apart from the genealogies) lies in the Llyfr Coch Hergest version of the poem: Taliesin's First Address which contains the following lines:

I have been with artful men
with Math or with Gofannon
With Eunydd, with Elestron
my journey with the furrow-maker
A year in Gofannon's fortress
I am old, I am new, I am Gwion

Which would seem to indicate that Eunydd and his brother Elestron were mages.
