A Cymric Mabinogion Hero: Vigorous, son of Battle

Eidoel mab Aer is a Cymric hero known from the Mabinogi of Culhwch ac Olwen where he is the son of 'Air' and the nephew of 'Lightning'. He is a prisoner and needs to be rescued in the quest for the world's oldest animals, in the attempt to rescue Mabon son of Modron.

Eidoel mab Aer is known form the tale of Culhwch ac Olwen as the cousin of Mabon fab Modron. Which probably makes Aer (air), Eidoel's father, the brother of Mabon's own father (whose name is never mentioned directly in any of the ancient texts or lineages [but who may be Mellt (lightning) and it makes sense that 'Lighting' would be the brother of 'Air']).

According to the tale of Culhwch ac Olwen Mabon was imprisoned so long ago that all memory of him has been lost and the first step in finding him is to locate his imprisoned cousin, Eidoel.

Arthur leads his host to the keep of Gwiwl where Eidoel is imprisoned. At Arthur's request Gwiwl is released and he journeys with Cei, Bedwyr and Gwrhyr to seek the world's oldest animals that some intelligence about Mabon's whereabouts may be obtained.

Eidoel's name is probably derived from the Middle Cymric form eidiog (vigorous) and with the patronymic mab Aer it can be interpreted as 'Vigorous son of Battle'.
