Celtic Gods: The Gaulish god, Kamoulatis (God of Liquor)

Kamoulatis
A Gaulish God: God of Liquor

Kamoulatis is a Gaulish god known from two inscriptions found in France. Nothing is know about this deity save his name which may be interpreted as 'God of Liquor'. If this is the case then he may represent a martial deity similar to Demetos (God of Drunkenness) marking the Celtic practice of getting drunk before a battle.

Gaul: God of Liquor

Kamoulatis is known from a single complete inscription found at Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, Bouches-du-Rhône, France and another incomplete inscription that might read Kamoulatis found at Vertault, Côte d'Or. Nothing is known of this deity save his name. However, Kamoulatis' name can be interpreted as containing the reconstructed proto-Celtic components Kamulo- (god) and *lati- (liquor). Thus Kamoulatis is the 'God of [intoxicating] liquor'.

By analogy Kamoulatis may have been a deity of the 'Mars' or warrior type, which would make him a deity of the same type as Braciaca, Meduio and Dyfed (Demetos) all deities celebrating the practice of inebriation before battle.
