Gaul: Constant Companion

Carantana is a goddess known from inscriptions forund at Etrechy, Cher, in France where she was associated with the deities: Etiona, Isosa, Gnatus, Hidua and Mercury.

Etymologically Carantana is derived from the reconstructed proto-Celtic roots *karant- (friend) and *ana (breathe, remain) and can be interpreted as 'remaining friend' or 'Constant Companion'. Her association with Mercury (a healing deity) and Gnatus (a probable god of knowledge) may make Carantana a deity of the Roman Minerva type — a patroness of warriors, medicine and wisdom.
