A Gaulish Goddess: Dear One

Caiva is a Gaulish goddess known from two inscriptions found in Germany where she is invoked as a multiple goddess, indicating that she represents a Celtic mother goddess.

Gaul: Dear One

Caiva is a goddess known from inscriptions found at a Roman temple in Selm, where the Inscription (CIL XIII 04149) is dedicated to Caivae Deae and also at Büdesheim, where the inscription (AE 1989, 543) is also dedicated to [D]e(a)e Caiv(ae) AV[ (both sites are in Germany). By inference from the plural form of her name she would seem to be a mother goddess though her attributes are now lost.

Etymologically the origin of Caiva are uncertain, though a tentative association with the Old Cymric *cud (dear one) might be made. An appelation that would make sense for a mother goddess.
