Celtic Gods: The Gaulish god, Bussumarus (Great of Voice)

Bussumarus
A Gaulish Deity, (also known as Bussumarius and Bussurigius): Great of Voice

Bussumarus (Bussumarius, Bussurigius) is a Gaulish god known from Romania and Turkey. He is equated with Roman Jupiter and the interpretation of his name as meaning 'great of voice' would indicate that he might be a thunder deity of the 'father of the tribe' type.

Synonyms: Bussumarius, Bussurigius
Gaul: Great of Voice

A Gaulish god known from Alba Iulia, Romania, (also known as Bussumarius) where he is equated with Jupiter Optimus Maximus.

The root Bussu is probably derived from the reconstructd proto-Celtic *bussu- (lip) and taking 'lip' to mean mouth or voice the name can be interpreted as 'Great of Voice' then the equating of Bussumarus with Jupiter makes some sense. Jupiter being a sky god, master of thunder and the loudest voice in the heavens. This would make Bussumarus a thunder god similar to Taranis.

In the form of Bussurigius, (king of [great] voices), a name at least etymologically related to Bussumarus he is known from inscriptions at Alba Iulia, Romania and Aktchá Tash, Turkey where he is equated with the Greek Zeus.
