Gaul: He who is Victorious

Knowm from a single inscription found at Laval, France where he is invoked as Marti Budenic[o] (Mars Budenicus) [CIL XII 2973].

The god's name can be derived from the reconstructed proto-Celtic root *boudīko- 'victorious' and the Latinized masculine ending -us yielding 'He who is Victorius'. A fitting etymology for a deity the Romans equated with Mars. The god's name shares essentially the same etymology as Boudicca: leader of the Brigantes during the Icenian revolt of 62CE.

Thus, Budenicus is a martial deity, associated with victory in battle.
