Celtic Gods: The Brythonic god, Bregans (The High One)

Bregans
A Brythonic God, The High One

Bregans (Bregantis) is a Brythonic deity known from a singl inscription at Slack, England. He may be related to the goddess, Brigantia and might be the male aspect of the titular diety of the Brigantes tribe.

Synonyms: Bregantis
Bryth: ?The High One

A Romano-Brython deity known from the inscription: DEO BREGANTI ET N AVG T AVR QVINTVS D D P ET S S (To the God Bregan[s|tis] and the Divine Spirit of the Emperor, Titus Aurelius Quintus dedicates this offering for himself and his family) found on an altar at Slack, Yorkshire.

He is believed by many to be the consort of Brigantia, mostly based ono the similarity of their names, both of which are derived from the reconstructed proto-Celtic *bri- (hill, high) yielding the theonym 'High One'. Bregans may well be the male aspect of the tutelary deity of the Brigantes.
