Allobrogis
A Gaulish god: God of the Compatriots

This deity is known from a single inscription found at Montsaléon, Hautes-Alpes, France. He is the tutelary deity of the Allobriges tribe of south-western Gaul and this is a god of the 'Father of the Tribe' type.

Allobrogis is a deity known from a single inscription (CIL XII, 1531) found at Montsaléon, Hautes-Alpes, France which reads: Pompeia Lucilla Allobrog(i) v(otum) s(olvit) l(ibens) m(erito) (From Pompeia Lucilla to Allobrogis; willingly and deservedly in fulfilment of a vow). Though this is the only inscription known to the deity the theonym is virtually identical to the name of the Allobriges tribe of western Gaul.

Both the theonym and the tribal name can be derived from the reconstructed proto-Celtic elements: *al(i)yo- (other) and *mrogi- (territory). Thus the Allobriogi can be interpreted as 'Those from other territories'. This is very similar in meaning to 'Cymry' (literally 'compatriots') and thus the Allobrigi can be considered as the 'Compatriots' and Allobrigis is the 'God of the Compatriots'; which indicates that the tribe of the Allobrigi either was made-up of different peoples or they were in-comers to their region of Gaul.
