A hypothetical goddess derived from the name of the river Aeron in Cardiganshire. It is true that Celtic belief most water sources had patron, protective, (usually female) deity ascribed to them. By extension, Aeron is derived from the archaic Cymric aer (battle). In proto-Celtic aer is derived from *agro- (carnage, battle) hence the patron goddess of the river Aeron would originally have been known as Agronā.
As a battle goddess she might be cognate with one of the aspects of the Irish Morrigan, namely Macha, goddess of Emain Macha, the seat of the kings of Ulster.
She could equally be the warrior aspect of a local mother goddess whose mother aspect has been lost by the obfuscation of the intervening centuries.
