Gaul: Defending God/The River God

Abinius is a god know from a single inscription found at Cimiez, Alpes Maritimes, France [CIL V 7856] where he is invoked as deo Abinio. Some have linked this god with Abianius though the non-concordance of vowel sounds (ie the additional 'a') makes this unlikely. Unfortunately, all we known of this deity is his name and any of his attributes mus be derived from the name alone.

The god's name can be interpreted on the basis of the reconstructed proto-Celtic lexicon as being derived from the either the element *awo/abo (river) or *aw-je/o (defend) along with the deicitic particle -n- and the Latinized masculine ending -us. Thus Abinius is either the 'River God' or the 'Defending God'.

If the interpretation 'Defending God' for Abinius is correct then this deity was probably a tribal defender of the 'Mars' type.
