Celtnet Information eZine

I somehow can't believe that it's the beginning of September already. School will be starting within a couple of days and Christmas is less than four months away. Now is definitely the time to be thinking about your Christmas campaigns so that you have time to start putting them in motion. For me that means starting to put my various Christmas-associated recipes to the fore. Perhaps showing the differences between modern and Medieval Christmas fare.

Now that the holidays are over it's time to re-double your marketing efforts. Certainly that's what seems to be happening out there in 'marketingland', at least based on the number of marketinig e-mails that I've started to get this week. Certainly it's part of what you should be thinking of doing. But maybe it's best to put it off for a week or two until the current flurry of emails has died down. That way your message my have a better chance of getting through. That is, unless you are an expert copywriter who can write eye-catching subject lines for your emails every time.

As for me, I've been converting my site to support my Help Stefan Campaign to gain the money to save the life of the woman I love's father. Donations are coming in, but not quickly enough to really be able to help Stefan. This basically means that Stefan will have to make a dangerous trip across West Africa by bus just to see her father die. It's so frustrating that I cannot do more, especially as there's so much I would like to do to help.

Non Reciprocal and Reciprocal Links - Do We Need Them?

by Francisco Santander

Actually, the answer is yes........and no. What is a reciprocal link? It is a link to a page that is linked back to ours. Of course, a non reciprocal link is a link from a page that we are not directly linked to.

Page rank is associated in some ways to linking. You see, the more links that point to our pages, the more important Google tm or other search engines think our page is. Non reciprocal links to our page (not on our page) add a lot more weight than reciprocal links. Search engines think that if a page is willing to link to ours and not get a link back, then our page must be important. They see it as a recommendation. But that´s not always true. The importance of the pages that link to ours is also accounted for. You can get 100 free hosting pages of your own and then link them to your special page with non reciprocal links and you wouldn't get any change in rank; it is a "Zero * Zero = Zero" equation.

You have to get links from pages that rank well. Then comes the other side of the question. Can I have any page link mine? And the answer is NO. Search engines think of the web as a neighborhood. If you are linked to a good neighborhood then you must be good. If you are linked to a bad "hood" then you must be bad and they rank you.

So linking to pages with illegal content such as MP3's, Warez, Hackers, etc. will soon get you a bad ranking. And probably your submission to the directories will not be accepted.

The other point of linking is ANCHOR TEXT. Anchor text is the text of the hyperlink. Read this two examples:

Example 1
http://www.elmejorguia.com/Index_english.htm

Example 2
Free tools for webmasters

You inmediately see the difference. Although both links can point to the same page the way they are phrased is different. Not only does this make a difference in the way people read the link or the way the link gets their attention, but also when search engines "see" the link, they associate this words with your site and you climb ranks in those Keywords for any associated searchs.

Now you get the point?

Your links should have good anchor text that is related to the keywords that you want to exploit.

But search engines also see KEYWORD SPAM when they find too many links with the same phrasing beacuse it doesn't seem natural They think that it is impossible that all webmasters would write the same words when linking your page. That means that you have to use slightly different phrases each time you get links to your page.

Last but not least, search engines do not see words inside pictures so image links and banners do not get you any ranking for any keyword.

    Keeping your Customers

Much of this week's eZine deals with the theme of driving customers to your site by improving/increasing your site's Google rankings. This article deals with another aspect of internet marketing — keeping your customers. You website is how you interact with your customers. How you present it is very important.

Firstly your website should look provessional it should do things like scale sanely if the window size is changed. It should be compatible with all the major browsers on all the major platforms. Your site should also be easy to navigate, with simple links between relevant pages and a way to get back to your main page. If you have products pages then these should be informative and should tell your visitors about what you're selling or pre-selling to them.

If you have integrated content or a large website then your site should be searchable. If you have something like a recipe site then you should group similar web pages together and you should have some kind of comprehensive searching system.

Also, when writing for your website use your own 'voice' as this gives your site's visitors a sense of who you are and what you are about. It is through this that you develop a rapport with your visitors.

Make any important areas of your site easy to navigate to. Even more importantly make sure that any important pages or areas of your site are easily memorable. People may bookmark pages in your site, but in many cases it's much easier to remember an URL and type it in. The easiest way of doing this is to separate your site into silos or directories that correspond to the content you want to segregate. This way you can put an index.html file in the directory which effectively makes the directory 'clickable'. For example, if I had a 'mobile phone' section to my site I might want to put every mobile-associated page in a /mobiles directory so that a visitor could navigate to these pages by typing www.celtnet.org.uk/mobiles.

In the end it's the little things that make a site user friendly and it's these things that will keep your site's visitors coming back again and again.

    Business Tip

    Gaining Non-reciprocal Links

In terms of SEO getting in-bound non-reciprocal links to your websites is very important as these raise the Page Rank of your site so it goes higher in Google's listings. In the August 22nd issue of this eZine I talked about various ways you could get non-reciprocal links to your site by 'stealth'. The truth is, the better the content of your site the more likely it is that you will grow your in-bound links organically. However, and here's the catch-22 problem, you need your site to get noticed before you get any in-coming links. Also the anchor texts in these links are not up to you, they are put there by the link originator. So what to you do?

The answer is to go to non-reciprocal link directories. You will have to pay for inclusion into most of these, however there are a number out there that cost you only $1 for inclusion. Indeed, my One Dollar Links links pages allow you to purchase a link from that high-traffic area of my site for only $1. Even more important you define your own link text, in which you can use any three keywords you like. Again this will improve your link's ranking. Moroeover, there will never be more than 100 links on any page in my site (this is the maximum that Google indexes from any page). If you purchase a link from any other site and they have more than 100 links then your site's link may never be indexed from that page. For $10 you even have the option of having your site on my main Help Stefan Campaign page. Please note that any money you pay for link inclusion goes to the Help Stefan Campaign so that, not only are you improving the ranking of your own site you're also helping a cause that's very close to my heart. So, go on, do yourself a favour today.
