Window on the Web

I've been back adding more conent to this site (over 50 pages last week). All this content addition has also got me thinking about the layout of my site. The vast majority of the site is based on my Celtnet Recipes site. I'd designed 'look and feel' of the page itself a few years back now. The look was fine and there are some nice features on these pages. But I had made a fundamental mistake on those pages and I'll let you know about that and how to fix it below.
I work hard on my SEO and during the past two months I've doubled the number of links to this site and I've also doubled the traffic I'm getting and tripled the size of my eMail list. But some of my pages just weren't getting indexed for the keywords I was targeting, or I was only getting main pages indexed rather than the internal pages I wanted. If you've ever encountered this problem I will tell you how to solve it (if you've never encountered this problem then I will tell you how to never see it).
I should also tell you that I have a new product (or at least a massivley re-vamped) product available. It's the How to Maximize your Web Traffic eBook. It's all about SEO, and getting more links to your site. But it also tells you how to monetize your site, how to add Bum marketing and affiliate marketing to your revenue streams. Basically it's all the secrets of how I grew this site from nothing into a thriving eBusiness. Though the product is up and available for sale I haven't really pushed or marketed it properly. The campaign for that begins this weekend. Next week's eZine will contain a special report on product marketing and creating a 'buzz' around your launch. Don't miss that!

Slapping Google Back
by Dyfed Lloyd Evans
During the first few months of 2008 Google began by annoying a large number of small website owners. First there was the 'Google Spank' where many website owners saw their PageRank tumble. Close on the heels of this came a sharp drop in many webmasters' AdSense incomes.
Google's motto may be 'Don't Be Evil' but the Big 'G' has moved now from being a private company run by it's founders into being a publicly-traded company with stocks on the NYSE. This means that google is now beholden to its shareholders and Google has to make profits quarter on quarter to keep the shareholders happy. This is why Google is attempting to protect its PageRank algorithm by penalizing websites who buy links. This is also why Google has been changing the model for its AdSense ads. Google seem to be going for a model of lower click volume for higher return on investment (ROI). The philosophy: high quality advertisers provide higher incentive to click and better relevancy to searchers, and justify not only higher cost-per-click, but also an elitist placement scheme. Which is a problem if you're a small site or you don't get enough traffic as you will probably never see the premium ads which now seem to be Google's goal.
All this will boost Google's bottom line and it's great for big websites who will see and benefit from the new premium ads. But it will leave smaller websites out in the cold and their AdSense revenues can't help but take a tumble. Added to this are the problems many website owners have had of being accused by Google of clicking on their own ads to inflate earnings.
Given all these problems, maybe it's time to return the compliment and to slap Google back by telling them where to go. But if you do give Google the heave-ho, what do you put in their place?
As it happens, you have a whole range of products that you could use instead of Google:
1. Kontera in-text ads
Kontera offers what are called in-text ads. They mark-up text on your page ad if a visitor does a mouseover on these ads a window pops up. You get paid if someone clicks on one of these ads.
2. Pay-per-Play Ads
Pay-per-Play Media ooks like shaping-up to be the 'next biggest thing' on the web. You sign-up, add a snippet of code to your web pages and they play a 5-second audio ad once your page loads. You get paid each and every time an ad plays!
3. WidgetBucks Widgets
WidgetBucks Ads. Widget Bucks offer product ads in a range of formats. Here you can pick a product or product type and you get product comparisons and product images displayed.
4. Amazon Associates Program
This is the grand-daddy of all affiliate programs and offers a whole host of ad types, ad formats and product choices.
If you are looking for a direct replacement for AdSense Ads:
5. Microsoft and Yahoo!
a: Yahoo! Publisher Network which is Yahoo!'s version of AdSense.
b: Microsoft adCenter which is Microsoft's version of AdSense.
6. ClickBank Based Ads
ClickBank is a huge marketplace of electronic products, each available for immediate download. You simply join ClickBank as an affiliate and begin promoting their products. Typically you make between $20 and $90 for each sale. ClickBank itself does not provide ads, but sites such as Celtnet CickBank Contextual Ads allow you to create AdSense-like ads based on ClickBank products. You just add your ClickBank id, chose the product range you want (either by type, section and keyword) and you design your ad format. Just like AdSense there's a huge range of sizes and styles. Copy the code snippet generated to your site and you're ready to go. These ads look exactly like AdSense ads except that you get paid when someone buys a product, rather than when someone clicks on a link. But as you can earn much more per sale you can actually earn more from these types of ads than from adsense. They're also free for you to deploy.
If you really want to replace Google's AdSense ads on your site you will see that you actually have lots of options. Most of these systems don't have as restrictive terms of service as Google either, so you can mic ClickBank ads with Kontera Ads, pay-per-pay ads and Amazon ads. Used correctly a mix of these ads will mean that you actually earn more per month than you would from Google alone.

What's Hot in ClickBank
With so much of my focus going on ClickBank and ClickBank associated pages over the past few (and the forthcoming months) I thought that I should add a weekly digest of What's Hot in ClickBank to you, my loyal readers. Each weekend I update the ClickBank feed for my Celtnet ClickBank Marketplace, which then drives the various Free ClickBank search and Ads Code systems I provide. I've also started to perform analyses of the current against the previous ClicBank datafeed releases. Each time ClickBank perform a new release they analyze their sales and other data for that time period and they re-evaluate product rankings on this basis. New products come in, old products fall out of the system and product rankings go up and go down. I will soon be making a full digest of these data available so you can check which products have moved, how the products you are promoting are doing, as well as keeping you informed of any product price changes...
What this isn't is a list of all the top products for the week. Indeed, the top products probably aren't the ones you should promote as there's a lot of competition out there. Rather, what I'm presenting is a digest of the 'hot' mid range products. The ones that are on the up. I also support these product statements with an analysis of what people are searching for on my system. And you have to remember that I annotate all he ClickBank products by hand so my Celtnet ClickBank Search System ClickBank search system is one of the most comprehensive out there, and certainly better that ClickBank's own serach system. It's also the same system that drives my Free ClickBank Search Code, allowing you to put comprehensive ClickBank searches on your site.
The ClickBank database driving this site was updated on Tuesday 11th March 2008 with the inclusion of 292 new products into the ClickBank system. These have been uploaded and annotated into the Celtnet ClickBank Marketplace and are now searchable. All the products have had their images updated and the products in ClckBank's 'top 30' in all categories have had their descriptions and sales text to make them easier for you to sell!
There is still some fall-out from ClickBank's recent alteration to their ranking algorithm, so that lots of existing products have had their rankings changed this week as well. As a result you will notice lots of product churn in my Cletnet ClickBank Marketplace Digest.
Of the various searches performed on my site during the previous week, two really stand out. The first is for anything to do with 'weight loss' and the second for the terms 'forex trading' or clear debt so you can see that the economic downturn and the efect of Christmas bills are the two things foremost on people's mind. Interestingly, however, the products that are making most advances in terms of ClickBank rankings are all those to do with gardening (search for gardening greenhouse orchids. These seem to be the products to promote at the moment and if you can build a niche site around these terms then using these ad feeds for your site would be a real boon. Remember that it will soon be even easier for you to have these ads on your site as you can use an RSS feed along with your AdSense ads. I'll provide you with all the tools you need!
Of the various products promoted in ClickBank, the following have been my top sellers: Top Secret Fat Loss Secret; EZ Auction Cash Machine; Convert Your Car To Burn Water + Gasoline = Double Your Mileage! and Success with NLP - Master your Mind design your Destiny.
*New* As a service to all the loyal supporters who are using my Celtnet ClickBank Marketplace I'm now offering a weekly digest of all the new and latest products in the ClickBank marketplace download. As always, there is no charge for this service and I certainly don't want you to sign-up for anything. You can access my Celtnet ClickBank Marketplace Digest.

Dominating your Niche II
In last week's eZine I talked about the importance of dominating your niche and I'm going to return to this theme again today. Last week I talked about chosing a niche and then dominating that niche by marketing. But this time I'm looking at the niche issue from the other end.
If you have heard of an internet marketing principle called the Long Tail Effect you will know that, taken together, rare events can actually sum together to account for a larger percentage of the total number occurrences than the star players or 'top performers'. As a result targeting a bunch of small niches with little competition can bring in as much money for you as if you were targeting a single popular keyword or area.
Indeed, as long as people are searching for information about it, just about any niche can be profitable. Don't believe me? One of my niches is Wild Food Recipes which is allied to a Guide to Wild Foods. Both of which deal with sourcing and cooking edible wild plants. Now that's a pretty micro niche, right?
But I actually make decent money from these pages. Partly it's because there's very little competition in this sector. Though like all sections of my website I still had to do the SEO and the marketing. I had to build links and get people to the pages. But because the competition was smaller I really didn't have to do as much work as I normally would.
As long as you can get traffic to your site and you have good content and can continue adding content then just about any niche will work for you. I even have a truly tiny niche on my site for Welsh (Cymric) recipes and even though there are only about 50 pages in total I'm getting 120 visitors a day to this section of the site. And that's just one niche. Create 10 such niches and you have 1000 extra visitors, create 20 and you have 2000 extra visitors.
This really is a case of the 'long tail' effect in action. The whole point is that it's really, really easy to set up these micro niches and you can keep on adding new ones to your site week in and week out. With a little link building and some SEO they rapidly get listed in the search engines and they can rapidly bring new traffic to your site. More traffic means more income and more income means more freedom for you. This is why niches are important and why micro niches that everyone else ignores can make a real difference to your bottom line.
Business Tip
Links, Links, Links...
Your website lives or dies based on its traffic... The more traffic you gave and the better your campaigns will perform and the more passive income you will generate. What generating more traffic means is building extra links to your site. The more links you have and the better your site will perform. Just read the article on How to Double your Website's Traffic in Two Weeks to find out what this can mean for you...
Whatever your web presence, as long as you have some kind of presence on the internet then you will need traffic to your site. The only way to get traffic to your site is to get more in-bound links. How you do this is up to you. But if you ignore getting links then you are simply allowing a good portion of what should be your internet-based income to be frittered away. Look at it this way, if you can gain a hundred new links from quality sites you could double your website's traffic... And writing articles is a great way of doing this. Each article allows you at least two back-links and you should have no problem creating 6 articles in a day. This means 12 articles per day and 100 back-links in less than two weeks!
You could, of course, go chasing after the latest internet fads (and some, like submitting your content sites to social bookmarking websites are worthwhile). But, in the end, what you should do is to look after your core business and this means looking after your basic SEO and that means building your back-links week-in and week-out.
