Window on the Web

I've been back adding more conent to this site (over 50 pages last week). All this content addition has also got me thinking about the layout of my site. The vast majority of the site is based on my Celtnet Recipes site. I'd designed 'look and feel' of the page itself a few years back now. The look was fine and there are some nice features on these pages. But I had made a fundamental mistake on those pages and I'll let you know about that and how to fix it below.
I work hard on my SEO and during the past two months I've doubled the number of links to this site and I've also doubled the traffic I'm getting and tripled the size of my eMail list. But some of my pages just weren't getting indexed for the keywords I was targeting, or I was only getting main pages indexed rather than the internal pages I wanted. If you've ever encountered this problem I will tell you how to solve it (if you've never encountered this problem then I will tell you how to never see it).
I should also tell you that I have a new product (or at least a massivley re-vamped) product available. It's the How to Maximize your Web Traffic eBook. It's all about SEO, and getting more links to your site. But it also tells you how to monetize your site, how to add Bum marketing and affiliate marketing to your revenue streams. Basically it's all the secrets of how I grew this site from nothing into a thriving eBusiness. Though the product is up and available for sale I haven't really pushed or marketed it properly. The campaign for that begins this weekend. Next week's eZine will contain a special report on product marketing and creating a 'buzz' around your launch. Don't miss that!

It's the Content, Stupid!
by Dyfed Lloyd Evans
We all know the Internet mantra of Contnet, Content, Content; just how important it is for your site, blog, eZine or whatever your internet prsence happens to be... After all if you don't regularly post fresh, new, content then the search engine spiders don't have a reason to visit you site. You also need new content to keep your site's visitors interested and happy. The more new things that you site's visitors see on your site the more likely it is that they will return to visit your site again.
Fresh content, added frequently, is also good for your SEO in that it will help you to organically grow your in-bound links. 'How to' guides are particularly useful for this and you'd be surprised at just how many people search for phrases such as 'How do I...'. Often these key phrases occur tens or hundreds of times a day and tend to have very low competition. One that I've personally targeted is 'How do I Cook a Loin of Pork'. A tiny niche you may think, but it's eighty searches per day on average and only 1 competitor.
What I'm trying to do here is to target a niche where I can provide useful information in that niche. Basically I'm attempting to dominate the niche so my page comes out as the best one for that search term. I'm also trying to give the site visitor a good experience and I'm using the page to link to other pages on my site. In this case it's less about product marketing and more about getting good back-links, but the same principle applies to promoting products and ads as well (or blog posts or whatever).
Basically it's a case of find a good niche, write good content and be the best in that niche. Another approach is to find a niche and then find as many variants of the keywords for that niche that you can. Then you write a short article targeting each one of those keywords and you submit those to as many article directories as possible. This is niche domination by Blitzkrieg.
I use both approaches, though the one I prefer is to write good quality content and then to market that content. Of course, when I write I always have an audience in mind. Or, more likely I'm actually writing for the benefit of one single person. I try and design my web pages to be as informative and useful as possible. I put all the navigation tools my users will need there and allow them to search my site and to discover other content they may be interested in. As a result my designs have grown organically and they've fundamentally been there to give the user as good an experience as possible.
Like almost everyone I use a three-colum layout (just as on this page) with a header and a footer. This is all great. The user expects this kind of layout and they're familiar with it. I also use pure CSS to create the layout. Which gives me lightweight markup and allows for the layout to be changed easily. This was great, but the CSS driving the site was written over 2 years ago now and all with the site's visitor in mind.
I've optimized my pages. Adding my keywords to headers to images and everywhere that's sensible. What I forgot, however, was that I wasn't just writing my content for my site's visitors. I was also writing my pages for the search engines.
I'd designed my page in the following manner:
---------------------
header
---------------------
col1 | Col2 | col3
----------------------
footer
-----------------------
All nicely logical, after all the user sees col1 (the left sidebearing) then the main content (Col2) and then the right sidebearing (col2). What I'd forgotten, though, is that this is how the indexing spiders would also see the content.
In reality, as far as indexing goes the main content (Col2) is far more important than either the sidebearings as this is where the main content of the page is. This is what I really want indexed. But what I was actually giving the indexing spiders was a long list of links on the left sidebearing (col1). So the indexing spiders were diligently going through my pages top to bottom and seeing:
header
----------
col1
----------
Col2
----------
col3
----------
footer
----------
The main content of the page was being buried after all the col1 stuff. There was no way that the indexing spiders could pick-out what was most important about the page and that was why my pages weren't showing up well in the search results. Basically all the SEO I'd done elsewhere was useless because I didn't have the basics right.
In my defence I will sat that I was a relative newbie when I wrote that CSS all those years ago and the problem was a legacy one. When I'd spotted the problem however, it took me precisely 15 lines of code in my CSS file, 2 additional lines of code in my web page, 3 other changes and one major 'cut and paste' to present the web page in the following format:
header
-------------
col2
-------------
col1
--------------
col3
-------------
footer
-------------
Now the indexing engines find my main body of text almost immediately and it gets indexed (already, only 24 hours after the change) I'm seeing a whole bunch of my recipe pages moving up the search results. But the great thing is that, as far as the site's visitors are concerned, absolutely nothing has changed. The pages look the same as they've always done.
My code pretty much looks as neat as ever and the changes propagate throughout the site 'free' as the entire content is database driven and there's only a single creation page. Now the users will see what they always have, the page source is presented to the search engines with the most important text at the top and the indexing of my pages will improve. Within a couple of weeks this simple change will give me many more visitors as my pages get indexed for relevant content (and not just links) and more of my keywords get indexed.
It's pretty much a win-win situation... Admittedly it took me a couple of hours to figure-out the CSS (and I'll be publishing that very soon in the Celtnet Info CSS section of this site. But after that it was just a case of plugging the altered CSS file into the existing pages and making a few small changes to get the content ordered the way I wanted it.
The lesson from all of this... SEO and marketing can get you a very long way to getting your pages indexed but you have to remember that you're writing your pages both for your site's visitors and also for the search engines. And a small slip-up in your web page's design can literally cost you thousands of missed visitors a day.

What's Hot in ClickBank
With so much of my focus going on ClickBank and ClickBank associated pages over the past few (and the forthcoming months) I thought that I should add a weekly digest of What's Hot in ClickBank to you, my loyal readers. Each weekend I update the ClickBank feed for my Celtnet ClickBank Marketplace, which then drives the various Free ClickBank search and Ads Code systems I provide. I've also started to perform analyses of the current against the previous ClicBank datafeed releases. Each time ClickBank perform a new release they analyze their sales and other data for that time period and they re-evaluate product rankings on this basis. New products come in, old products fall out of the system and product rankings go up and go down. I will soon be making a full digest of these data available so you can check which products have moved, how the products you are promoting are doing, as well as keeping you informed of any product price changes...
What this isn't is a list of all the top products for the week. Indeed, the top products probably aren't the ones you should promote as there's a lot of competition out there. Rather, what I'm presenting is a digest of the 'hot' mid range products. The ones that are on the up. I also support these product statements with an analysis of what people are searching for on my system. And you have to remember that I annotate all he ClickBank products by hand so my Celtnet ClickBank Search System ClickBank search system is one of the most comprehensive out there, and certainly better that ClickBank's own serach system. It's also the same system that drives my Free ClickBank Search Code, allowing you to put comprehensive ClickBank searches on your site.
The ClickBank database driving this site was updated on Tuesday 4th March 2008 with the inclusion of 146 new products into the ClickBank system. These have been uploaded and annotated into the Celtnet ClickBank Marketplace and are now searchable. All the products have had their images updated and the products in ClckBank's 'top 30' in all categories have had their descriptions and sales text to make them easier for you to sell!
There is still some fall-out from ClickBank's recent alteration to their ranking algorithm, so that lots of existing products have had their rankings changed this week as well. As a result you will notice lots of product churn in my Cletnet ClickBank Marketplace Digest.
Of the various searches performed on my site during the previous week, two really stand out. The first is for anything to do with 'weight loss' and the second for the terms 'eliminate debt' or clear debt so you can see that the economic downturn and the efect of Christmas bills are the two things foremost on people's mind. Interestingly, however, the products that are making most advances in terms of ClickBank rankings are all those to do with gardening (search for gardening greenhouse orchids. These seem to be the products to promote at the moment and if you can build a niche site around these terms then using these ad feeds for your site would be a real boon. Remember that it will soon be even easier for you to have these ads on your site as you can use an RSS feed along with your AdSense ads. I'll provide you with all the tools you need!
Of the various products promoted in ClickBank, the following have been my top sellers: Top Secret Fat Loss Secret; EZ Auction Cash Machine; Convert Your Car To Burn Water + Gasoline = Double Your Mileage! and Success with NLP - Master your Mind design your Destiny.
*New* As a service to all the loyal supporters who are using my Celtnet ClickBank Marketplace I'm now offering a weekly digest of all the new and latest products in the ClickBank marketplace download. As always, there is no charge for this service and I certainly don't want you to sign-up for anything. You can access my Celtnet ClickBank Marketplace Digest.

Dominating your Niche
In the main feature article I've talked a little about niches and how you need to dominate a given niche to really succeed at internet marketing. Indeed, the use of niches is something that all of us involved in internet marketing employ in one way or another. It's just how the internet industry works. The more niches you can enter and the more you dominate those niches then the more money you will make — it's as simple as that!
Or, at least, the theory is simple. Putting that theory into practice is something else entirely. It works like this: you perform your keyword searches. From this you pick a set of keywords: perferrably keywords that have a number of searchers but little competition. You write articles or content targeted to those keywords then you make your content available. You can also use systems like USFreeAds to quickly write new ads around your keywords.
As you can see this is a lot of work and it's fairly hit and miss in many ways. This is why, for the first time I'm going to recommend someone else's product in this eZine. Rob Benwell, of 'Blogging to the Bank' fame has just produced a new eBook: Niche Annihilation Method at only 45 pages this is a quick read and pages 1 to 39 contain all the details. Page 39 onwards contains your plan of how you can put the methods described into action. For once this is an eBook well worth grabbing. There are several strategies that were new to me and one that I definitely should be making more of.
If you are serious about dominating your niche and want to learn how (especially if you want to leverage Web 2.0) then Niche Annihilation Method is a product you absolutely must have. After all dominating those niches represents your surest route to profits. The other thing to remember is that almost no niche is too small for you to ignore. After all I'm making a profit off the 'How to Photograph Vegetables' niche!
Business Tip
Content, Content Content...
Great and new content is the secret to growing your website from a minnow to, if not a shark, then at least a pike... It's how you get noticed and the search engines absolutely love it. But adding all this content and marketing your site by adding even more content to article directories and blogs is exhausting. You could be writing non-stop for 6+ hours a day. Isn't it time you gave yourself a break?
I'm not saying that you can rest on your laurels... far from it... In fact, if you're not doing any affiliate marketing you will need a website of at leat 10 000 pages of excellent contact before you can begin making decent money from marketing. You can get here by yourself, that's true. However, if you're clever you can get your site's visitors to begin creating that content for you. If you have affiliate products then allow comments on those products. This is a good way of engendering buyer confidence as well as a great way of adding more content to your site. Then of course, you can add a Forum, a Blog (with comments) and an article directory to your site. Now I should say now that these are not easy options. You will need a certain level of content before you can sit back and let the others do the work. Indeed my own Celtnet Articles site to promote your website, product or even to add to your own 'Bum Marketing' campaign strategy is only just starting to take off now. But I have been writing frequently and promoting it hard. My Cetnet Forum is lagging behind and though I have a couple of active users it's not broken through the 'running on autopilot' barrier yet (but I am hopeful!). What I'm doing, basically, is adding a lot more work to my plate for the short-term, but with the hope that it will pay-off in the long term.
Like many things on the internet, you really have to play the long game. It may take up to a year for a new forum or article directory to properly get off the ground and all the while you have to promote what you have and are offering. But eventually you will break through and you will begin to get user-generated content. After all they're getting good back-links to their site by submitting content to your site. Your hard work in link-building icreases the page rank of your site which entices even more people to use your system.
That's it for this week, ladies and gentlemen. Check back next week for more from the world of CeltNet.
