CeltNet Cancer Information
The term 'cancer' is one that strikes fear into the hearts of many patients who are diagnosed with the disease. Often people think of it as a death sentence from which there is no escape. However, the truth about cancer is very different. I am a scientist who has worked with a number of different cancer types and the pages presented here represent an attempt by myself to gather all the latest information and treatments for various types of cancer into one place.
This region of my site will be extended frequently as I ad new information on new cancer types to the list tof cancers below and on the right. You will also see a general introduction here to what cancers are and how they arise. It should also be noted that cancer isn't a single disease. Rather it's a syndrome. Each differrent cancer type is unique both in the behaviour of the tumour and in the aetiology (manifestation and progression) of the disease. It is my hope that these pages will be useful in the understanding of different cancer types so that you may get to grips with the disease as it truly is.
Please be aware that these days most cancer types are either treatable or controllable. But the most important factor with any cancer is early detection. The sooner a tumour is identified the easier it is to treat. So, if you think that you may have any kind of cancer do not hesitate, go and see your doctor immediately.
The truth is that cancer is a syndrome rather than a single disease. Science has characterized over 200 different type of cancer and each cancer type typically comes from a different type of change in the parent cell. The cancer itself also reflects the characteristics and nature of the cell that gave rise to it. It's for these reasons that each type of cancer has to be treated and tackled indivitually. It's why there will never be a single 'magic cure' to cancer. Though there may be several distinct 'magic cures' treating a succession of cancer types.
Of the 200-odd cancer types by far the most common ones are: breast cancer, lung cancer, large bowel cancer and prostate cancer (in that order). But you can find a far more comprehensive list of cancer types on this site.
