Valentine

by Dyfed Lloyd Evans
Will you be my love, my Valentine
My counterpoint. The mirrored half
That makes my future whole.
A blossom to be grafted on
my lineage’s wildwood stock.

Strength and grace entwined;
become eternal lover’s knot
that’s nourished from a common root
of shared experience.
Divergent melodies, a writhing serpent dance
that melds to form a symphony —
a partnership

The truth, a share —
A personal and species stake
in mingling genes.
But do we care?
Lost as we are in love...

Come, share in divine lunacy
and partake of the cup of love;
its mead a heady brew
that makes of reason but a mocking jest
A punchline only two can fully share
Star-crossed in the unlikelihood
our congruence of confluence
So, dispel all your cares and blithely step with me,
To be my Valentine.

This poem was specifically written for Valentine's day 2006 and is an attempt at capturing what love means both at the individual and at the species level.
