Day in the Fast Lane

by Dyfed Lloyd Evans
Papers to write,
No sleep tonight
Coffee on tap
Avoids a nap.
Deadlines to meet
No time to eat.
Now what's the time
Get in by nine.
Edit the text —
On to the next.
Complete the task,
No room to bask.
Lunch is for wimps
Treadmill chimps.
Back to the screen
Rewrite the scene.
Can't talk today
Work's in the way.
Meeting's at three
No place for tea.
Exist without give —
No time to live.
In work to hide
Avoid the outside.
Coin a new term
Pat on the arm.
Log-off the 'net
Go home to fret.
Peruse your papers
Amend the chapters
Assignment's a pain —
No sleep again.

This was written when I worked in London and the daily commute was starting to get to me. It is a commentary on the pace of modern life and the push to do little more than work.
